The budget certainly went downhill.
The addition of Koyasu is bittersweet with the scrapping of the original cast.I've never seen any of the others so I can't compare, but I thought it was pretty good. I adore the opening theme to pieces.Zzzzzzzzzzz...zzzzzzzzzzzzz....zzzzzzzz...
Noir doesn't work when everything's so damn happy. And they got rid of the cherry-jam blood, which was the one notable thing about the original show. Not a huge fan of it, as beyond it's loli-tastic shooty girls there's not much to it beyond "angst angst I am a killer" except they don't angst, now do they, since they're all cyberwhatchamakallits.
Also significantly less awesome than the original, wherein Henrietta gunned down like 12 guys in the first 10 minutes.I haven't seen the original series, though I've heard many good things about it, but I wasn't very impressed with this episode one. The opening theme is kind of cool, and Rico is cute, but that's about it. The riot scene was very sloppily done, I think.In comparison this is the 1st GSG opening; mind the quality, it's Youtube.

The first had more budget, more violence, and the cybernetic aspect of the girls and their inevitable end was their main showpoints.
Il Teatrino seems to keep with the book tighter so far, though the girls are still cybernetic, and it remains to be seen if the show will follow the Italian novel, or the Japanese manga instead.
Still, initial impressions aren't bad.
