Evangelion 1.01 You Are (Not) Alone

Have you seen Eva before? If yes, then go watch the originals or the remastered editions while holding the fast-forward button. Congrats: that's this show. It's basically Eva: Special Edition, with all the horrifying Han Shot First implications that brings.

Is it so much to ask for a little bit of creativity in what's essentially a remake? Do you really, REALLY have to redraw that entire penguin scene shot for shot, frame for frame? Oh, wait. You added another type of beer to the fridge. INNOVATION! And everything's a zillion times darker since noone remembered to turn on the lights. REALISM!

Another issue is the pacing. It might be just me, but putting all the episodes back to back like this created a lot of time compression. It seems like Shinji is hopping in and out of that mech every 15 minutes and fights 11 angels a day or something. The original spaced things out a little bit more, I think.

This last point is a personal gripe: I just can't take the show seriously after reading Toastyfrog's brilliant thumbnail theater version of it. http://www.toastyfrog.com/toastywiki/in ... ailTheatre

And some of the scenes are just weird. "Behold, Shinji, the giant alien crucified Jesus that you are fighting to protect! Aren't you inspired now!?" No, doofus, he's even MORE traumatized! God! Show him Captain America or something, not Space Satan!

Some viewers may enjoy the remake due to the all new morphtastic Ramiel (AKA Big Blue Diamond). Me, I think it's a Starmie.

If you have somehow never heard of Eva before, you might like this show. More likely, you will simply want Shinji to die, die, die.

That does throw some sand into the gears of pretentiousness doesn't it?

Damnit now whenever I see the movies I'm gonna have those thumbnails in my mind!
