Kannagi - Crazy Shrine Maidens

The thing I like the most about this one is that the guy had a reasonable reaction, which is to say that he was all like, "What the hell is going on here?" without going nuts or just staring in rapt, fanboy awe. Then, once he has the score, he seems relatively cool about it without being blase. So he's neither "Well of course all of this is real!" nor "I refuse to believe what I see before my eyes!"

Not one I plan on following particularly, but not a bad first episode.

This show has all the hallmarks of a magical girlfriend/harem show. Exotic 'first girl'? Check. Unlucky Childhood friend? Check. But the setup is unique, and I'm willing to give it a try. Only question I have is the final size of said harem. The OP indicates 3, but who knows.

This is the season of bad opens, it seems. Here again, we start with a lovely pastoral scene of a kid at a shrine with a creepy spider who encounters what appears to be a ghost. The animation hints at a Higurashi-esque serious drama, as does the general ambiance.

Then the opening kicks in and there’s an idol singer. ARGH!

But it makes up for it. Basic plot: spirit of the land decides to become an idol singer so she can be worshiped again and rid the land of evil. How is this original? I challenge you to find another show with a direct reference to the myth of Pygmalion in the opening act.

Here’s where it gets good. It’s a standard set-up, right? Young man dials Goddess Help Line, gets cute magic girl. Except in this case the girl was a tree spirit and is understandably pissed when she learns boy took a chisel to her rotting corpse. Boy also reacts to girl popping out of the statue he’s carved with the appropriate level of stunned horror. Then you have the goddess going out and vanquishing evil bugs á la Sailor Moon, and it works because they show how ridiculous the premise is: she’s running around with a dime-store Card-Captor Sakura wand with talismans tied to it and waving it at evil centipedes like an 11-year old cosplayer. But because she’s an actual goddess, it works!

The show has an interesting potential to be a cross between Kodocha (the show with the idol singer) and Oh My Goddess.

Not a bad premise, and I did so enjoy the main character's reaction. Though it'll more than likely lose out to other shows this season as far as what I plan to watch~ it doesn't look too bad... as long as it doesn't fall into a stereotypical rut ~
