Cobra - The Psychogun
No arguments about how the show is paced, and watching it, I keep getting an 'Anti-James Bond' vibe from Cobra. Sure it has the fancy gadgets (OxyCigar anyone?) and the women, but can it maintian that sense of cool for more than a couple episodes? The pace? Well, it wasn't plodding, that's for sure, but I wouldn't call it pitch-perfect. It's like putting a turbocharged V6 in, I dunno, a rusty Pinto: sure, it moves quick, but it's still ugly as hell and has no resale value.
The show doesn't drag at any point; there's a constant flow of occasionally original action. But the cheese is thick in this one: oxy-cigars? Power of God opening all doors? Funny, but for all the wrong reasons. I got the distinct impression that this show was taking itself seriously, which is a fatal mistake when you're aping the worst excesses of '70s-80s sci-fi animation. Although I think some episodes of GI Joe had better storylines.
I dunno, maybe if you really wanted to watch a 1970s anime and you can't find your 8mm original of Astro Boy, you might want to watch this. Otherwise, why bother? This show... yeah... I rarely actively dislike the shows we watch, tending more towards indifference for the ones I don't like, but this one was just plain bad and nonsensical. Apparently in the future thong bikinis are considered professional wear for women. Oh, and the guy's gun is longer than his other arm without the prosthetic on it.
It's like someone crashed the worst parts of Heavy Metal into the worst parts of 70s and 80s anime and then forgot not to play it utterly straight.
